Lovely Links

Fatfreevegankitchen did a great article on nutritional yeast – very useful, as I never ever know how to explain what it is! (“erm, well…it looks a lot like fish food, but it tastes kind of cheesy…it’s really great!” is my usual response)

This creamy lemon pasta bake from Cooking Vegan Food Up North is going on my to-do list.

This has nothing to do with veganism, but here’s some fun instructions on how to tie a scarf!

I made this lasagne recently, and it was awesome. The cashew cheese stuff was brill and I intend to make it again – I’m sure it would be good spread on crackers or with veggie sticks as a dip.

I’m planning to make this fruit┬ácake tonight. For Christmas!

I went on a lovely jaunt to Scotland recently, and went to David Bann in Edinburgh. I’ve been to this restaurant before (in January) so knew I was in for a treat.

I know it looks a bit grey, but the inside is nice!

We had the full 3 courses, and it was wonderful! Click here to see the menu. I thought that the starter and main course sections had a good selection of vegan options.

To start:

Thai fritter of spiced broccoli and smoked tofu

Main course:

Chilli filo tart with mash and parsnip sauce

The main course was such a brilliantly unusual combination. Bean chilli in a filo pastry tart topped with guacamole, with potato mash, parsnip puree and swede chips. I don’t think I would ever think to put these things together, but it was delicious.

Filo basket of warm orange caramel fruit with coconut rum sorbet

This was really nice, but the dessert section of the food menu let this restaurant down a little bit. When I went to the restaurant in January, I had this exact dessert, and I did so because it was the only vegan option. So not only is there still only one vegan dessert option, but it is exactly the same as almost a year ago (I wonder if the other desserts have changed?). However, that’s not to say this wasn’t a nice dessert, because it was!
