1847 in Manchester

While visiting family in Manchester recently I had the joy of being taken to 1847 Vegetarian Bistro. It’s such a treat to go to vegan-friendly places where I get to choose from a few items on the menu!

1847 had lovely decor and nice atmosphere. The menu was pretty great too:

3 out of 4 of the appetisers were vegan, 4 out of 6 of the starters, 3 out of 5 of the mains, and all of the side orders

I had the white bean and sundried tomato fritters to start:

Very nice, and just the right size. The lemon to squeeze over them worked really well.

And hubby had the flatbread with harissa, which I had a taste of:

Personally I found the harissa a bit too strong, but he loved it. The bread was really nice.

For my main I had the red rice salad with brocolli, peas, cucumber, avocado, seeds, herbs and smoked tofu:

And then dessert!

50% of the dessert menu was vegan friendly

I had the gin and tonic cake with cucumber granite (sorbet type stuff):

I was a bit dubious about the cucumber thing, but it was delish. And the cake was like extra special lemon drizzle cake which tasted like gin!

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed our meal at 1847. Such a nice choice of dishes for vegans, and great quality food.

This is Unicorn, in Chorlton in Manchester:

It’s like heaven on earth for vegans. Seriously. Unicorn is a 100% vegan co-operative.

It’s pretty huge, and as well as the usual groceries it sells fresh fruit and veg, freshly made cakes and baked goods, bulk items such as cereals, beans, and nuts, toiletries and cleaning products, and alcohol.

not the best photo in the world, but you get the idea

I’m SO lucky, because my husband’s sister and partner live just around the corner from Unicorn, which means that when we visit them, I get to visit the shop. Double win. We went there on Sunday and here’s some of the wonderful stuff I came away with (it took lots of self control not to just buy one of everything and sell my car to pay for it).

Laura's Idea products - rice pudding, apple pancake and strawberries + yogurt pot

Avocado houmous - it's a bit special

A selection of burgers, sausages and tempeh

spelt flakes, cashew and banana crunchy cereal, and choc-o-malt drink

I also got some random biscuits and some snacks which we ate in the car on the journey home.

I would absolutely recommend this shop to all vegans. Here’s the details:
