Blackstrap molasses

A while ago I read this post on Bonzai Aphrodite (LOVE that site), and I was quite fascinated by the bit about blackstrap molasses! So I went and got me some blackstrap molasses, and for the past few months I have been having it regularly – I’m a big fan! I have this one:

I started by having it in porridge, but then one day I licked the spoon and thought it was awesome! So now I just eat a spoon of it sometimes while I watch TV (it lives on the coffee table :)). It’s definitely an aquired taste, not something everyone would like. It’s like black treacle. Super sweet but with a strong strong flavour. It’s an ingredient in some baking recipes (I’ve made double chocolate cookies with it before), and you can add it to things like porridge, or some websites recommend stirring it into warm almond or soya milk.

Anyway, here’s the important stuff:

  • Molasses are a by-product of the sugar refining process
  • 2 tbsp can provide 400mg calcium – around a third of the recommended amount
  • One tbsp contains 4.5mg of iron, nearly half the Recommended Daily Allowance of 10g
  • It’s also a source of potassium, magnesium, copper, and manganese
